Annie Whittaker loved everything about Christmas. She loved the weather, and the trees, brightly lit on everyone's front lawn, and the Santas outlined in lights on the roofs of people's houses. She loved the carols, and waiting for Santa Claus to come, going skating and drinking hot chocolate afterwards, and stringing popcorn with her mother and sitting wide-eyed afterwards looking at how beautiful their Christmas tree was, all lit up. Her mother just let het sit there in the glow of it, her five-year-old face filled with wonder. - The Gift (ch. 1) [Books (First Lines)] BUY VARYING HARE USED BOOK It was ten o'clock in the morning on Christmas Eve, when Jack and Liz Sutherland met with Amanda Parker. It was a sunny morning in Marin County, just north of San Francisco. It was the house she and Gordon had lived in for the past twenty years, and both her children had been born there. It has been built in the eighteenth century, and had tall, imposing bronze door on the street that led to the inner courtyard. The house was familiar and old and beautiful, with tall ceiling and splendid boiseries, lovely moldings, and parquet floors the color of brandy. - The Kiss (ch. 1) [Books (First Lines)] My first, and thus far only, marriage ended exactly two days before Thanksgiving. I remember the moment perfectly. - The Klone and I (ch. 1) [Books (First Lines)] A clock ticked loudly in the hall as Gabriella Harrison stood silently in the utter darkness of the closet. It was filled with winter coats, and they scratched her face, as she pressed her thin six-year-old frame as far back as she could, deep among them. - The Long Road Home (ch. 1) [Books (First Lines)] In any other supermarket, the woman walking down the aisle, pushing a cart between canned good and gourmet spices, would have looked strangely out of place. - The Ranch [Books (First Lines)] The traffic moved along the Santa Monica Freeway at a snail's pace, as Allegra Steinberg lay her head back against the seat of the midnight blue Mercedes 300. At this rate, it was going to take forever. - The Wedding [Books (First Lines)] Charles Delauney limped only slightly as he walked up the steps of Saint Patrick's Cathedral, as a bitter wind reached its icy fingers deep into his collar. It was two weeks before Christmas, and he had forgotten how cold it was in New York in December. It was years since he'd been back to New York . . . years since he'd seen his father. - Vanished (ch. 1) [Books (First Lines)] Everything in the house shone as the sun streamed in through the long French windows. The carved mahogany mantelpiece in one of the two front parlors had been polished until it sparkled, its carved rosettes and female busts oiled to perfection. The long marquetry table in the center of the room was equally handsome and had been equally well tended, although it was almost impossible to see it beneath the stacks of treasures that had been gathering there for weeks. - Wanderlust (ch. 1) [Books (First Lines)] The road to O'Malley's Airport was a long, dusty thin trail that seemed to drift first left, then right, and loop lazily around the cornfields. The airport was a small dry patch of land near Good Hope in McDonough County, a hundred and ninety miles southwest of Chicago. - Wings (ch. 1) [Books (First Lines)] Zoya closed her eyes again as the troika flew across the icy ground, the soft mist of snow leaving tiny damp kisses on her cheeks, and turning her eyelashes to lace as she listened to the horses' bells dancing in her ears like music. - Zoya (ch. 1) [Books (First Lines)] Displaying page 2 of 2 for this author: << Prev 1 [2]
