JAMES HENRY DIXON
English poet
(1803 - 1876)

God made bees, and bees made honey,
  God made man, and man made money,
    Pride made the devil, and the devil made sin;
      So God made a cole-pit to put the devil in.
      - transcribed by,
        from flysheet of Bible belonging to a pitman residing near Hutton-Henry, in Denham County
        [Providence]

She was not made out of his head, Sir,
  To rule and to govern the man;
    Nor was she made out of his feet, Sir,
      By man to be trampled upon.
        . . . .
          But she did come forth from his side, Sir,
            His equal and partner to be;
              And now they are coupled together,
                She oft proves the top of the tree.
