EBENEZER ELLIOTT ("THE CORN LAW RHYMER")
English poet
(1781 - 1849)

And here the sunflower of the spring
  Burns bright in morning's beam.
      - [Sunflowers]

Burns o'er the plough sung sweet his wood-notes wild;
  And richest Shakespeare was a poor man's child.
      - [Poverty]

God said,--"Let there be light!"
  Grim darkness felt His might,
    And fled away;
      Then startled seas and mountains cold
        Shone forth, all bright in blue and gold,
          And cried--"'Tis day! 'tis day!"
            "Hail, holy light!" exclaim'd
              The thunderous cloud that flam'd
                O'er daisies white;
                  And lo! the rose, in crimson dress'd,
                    Lean'd sweetly on the lily's breast;
                      And blushing murmur'd--Light!"
      - [Light]

If 'twere not for my cat and dog,
  I think I could not live.
      - [Cats]

One who has yearnings for equal division of unequal earnings. Idler or bungler, he is willing to fork out his penny and pocket your shilling.
      - [Communism]

Prophets of fragrance, beauty, joy, and song.
      - [Flowers]

Sleep, to the homeless thou art home; the friendless find in thee a friend.
      - [Sleep]

The quivering flesh, though torture-torn, may live, but souls, once deeply wounded, heal no more.
      - [Misfortune]

The toil's reward, that sweet industry,
  As love inspires with strength the enraptur'd thrush.
      - [Compensation]

Were 't not for my cat and dog, I think I could not live.
      - [Animals]

Within the sun-lit forest,
  Our roof the bright blue sky,
    Where fountains flow, and wild flowers blow,
      We lift our heads on high.
      - [Country]

'Tis toil's reward, that sweetens industry,
  As love inspires with strength the enraptur'd thrush.
      - Corn Law Rhymes (no. 7) [Work]

Almighty Father! let thy lowly child,
  Strong in his love of truth, be wisely bold,--
    A patriot bard, by sycophants reviled.
      Let him live usefully, and not die old!
      - Corn Law Rhymes--A Poet's Prayer [Prayer]

Life is short, and time is swift;
  Roses fade, and shadows shift.
      - Epigram [Life]

What is a Communist? One who has yearnings
  For equal division of unequal earnings.
      - Epigrams [Politics]

If e'er she knew an evil thought
  She spoke no evil word:
    Peace to the gentle! She hath sought
      The bosom of her Lord.
      - Hannah Ratcliff [Epitaphs]

Things of today?
  Deeds which are harvest for Eternity!
      - Hymn (l. 22) [Deeds]

Again the violet of our early days
  Drinks beauteous azure from the golden sun,
    And kindles into fragrance at his blaze.
      - Miscellaneous Poems--Spring [Violets]

Daisies infinite
  Uplift in praise their little growing hands,
    O'er every hill that under heaven expands.
      - Miscellaneous Poems--Spring (l. 13)
        [Daisies]

Stern fate and time
  Will have their victims; and the best die first,
    Leaving the bad still strong, though past their prime,
      To curse the hopeless world they ever curs'd
        Vaunting vile deeds, and vainest of the worst.
      - The Village Patriarch (bk. IV, pt. IV)
        [Fate]

The streams, rejoiced that winter's work is done,
  Talk of to-morrow's cowslips as they run.
      - The Village Patriarch--Love and Other Poems--Spring
        [Brooks]

Yet walk with me where hawthorns hide
  The wonders of the lane.
      - The Wonders of the Lane (l. 3) [Hawthorn]
