JOHN POMFRET
English poet
(1667 - 1703)

We live and learn, but not the wiser grow.
      - [Wisdom]

When Providence, for secret ends;
  Corroding cares, or sharp affliction, sends;
    We must conclude it best it should be so;
      And not desponding or impatient grow.
      - [Adversity : Affliction]

What's all the noisy jargon of the schools?
      - Reason (l. 57) [Teaching]

Heaven is not always angry when he strikes,
  But most chastises those whom most he likes.
      - To a Friend Under Affliction (l. 89)
        [Punishment]

We bear it calmly, though a ponderous woe,
  And still adore the hand that gives the blow.
      - Verses to his Friend under Affliction
        [Hand]
