Music, according to Wagner, is no longer to be considered merely
a means of exciting "the pleasure which we derive from beautiful
forms;" it is, instead, the most immediate means possessed by the
will for the manifestation of its inner impulses. Far from
exercising a determining influence of its own, "the aesthetic
form must itself be determined by the artist's inner intuition of
the idea."
