HANNAH FLAGG GOULD
American poet
(1789 - 1865)

O Thou, who in Thy hand dost hold
  The winds and waves that wake or sleep,
    Thy tender arms of mercy fold
      Around the seamen on the deep.
      - [Sailors]

O, still my fervent prayer will be,
  "Heaven's choicest blessing rest on thee."
      - [Prayer]

Alone I walked on the ocean strand,
  A pearly shell was in my hand;
    I stooped, and wrote upon the sand
      My name, the year, the day.
        As onward from the sport I passed,
          One lingering look behind I cast,
            A wave came rolling high and fast,
              And washed my lines away.
      - A Name in the Sand [Ocean]
