HELEN HUNT JACKSON (HELEN HUNT)
American writer and poet
(1830 - 1885)

Most men call fretting a minor fault, a foible, and not a vice. There is no vice except drunkenness which can so utterly destroy the peace, the happiness of a hoe.
      - [Fretting]

Words are less needful to sorrow than to joy.
      - [Words]

I know the lands are lit
  With all the autumn blaze of Goldenrod.
      - Asters and Goldenrod [Goldenrods]

But all lost things are in the angels' keeping, Love;
  No past is dead for us, but only sleeping, Love;
    The years of Heaven with all earth's little pain
      Make Good
        Together there we can begin again
          In babyhood.
      - At Last (st. 6) [Immortality]

On the king's gate the moss grew gray;
  The king came not. They call'd him dead;
    And made his eldest son, one day,
      Slave in his father's stead.
      - Coronation [Royalty]

But great loves, to the last, have pulses red;
  All great loves that have ever died dropped dead.
      - Dropped Dead [Love]

Wondrous interlacement!
  Holding fast to threads by green and silky rings,
    With the dawn it spreads its white and purple wings;
      Generous in its bloom, and sheltering while it clings,
        Sturdy morning-glory.
      - Morning-Glory [Morning-glories]

"O bees, sweet bees!" I said; "that nearest field
  Is shining white with fragrant immortelles
    Fly swiftly there and drain those honey wells."
      - My Bees [Bees]

The new is older than the old;
  And newest friend is oldest friend in this:
    That, waiting him, we longest grieved to miss
      One thing we sought.
      - My New Friend [Friends]

All summer she scattered the daisy leaves;
  They only mocked her as they fell.
    She said: "The daisy but deceives;
      'He loves me not,' 'he loves me will,'
        One story no two daisies tell."
          Ah foolish heart, which waits and grieves
            Under the daisy's mocking spell.
      - The Sign of the Daisy [Daisies]

Love has a tide!
      - Tides [Love]

When love is at its best, one loves
  So much that he cannot forget.
      - Two Truths [Love]

Bee to the blossom, moth to the flame;
  Each to his passion; what's in a name?
      - Vanity of Vanities [Passion]

For April sobs while these are so glad
  April weeps while these are so gay,--
    Weeps like a tired child who had,
      Playing with flowers, lost its way.
      - Verses--April [April]

Friend, ahoy! Farewell! farewell!
  Grief unto grief, joy into joy,
    Greeting and help the echoes tell
      Faint, but eternal--Friend, ahoy!
      - Verses--Friend, Ahoy! [Farewell]

Ah, March! we know thou art
  Kind-hearted, spite of ugly looks and threats,
    And, out of sight, art nursing April's violets!
      - Verses--March [March]

O May, sweet-voice one, going thus before,
  Forever June may pour her warm red wine
    Of life and passions,--sweeter days are thine!
      - Verses--May [May]

O month when they who love must love and wed.
      - Verses--May [May]

O sweet, delusive Noon,
  Which the morning climbs to find,
    O moment sped too soon,
      And morning left behind.
      - Verses--Noon [Day]

When the baby dies,
  On every side
    Rose stranger's voices, hard and harsh and loud.
      The baby was not wrapped in any shroud.
        The mother made no sound. Her head was bowed
          That men's eyes might not see
            Her misery.
      - When the Baby Died [Babyhood]
