Distrust any enterprise that requires new clothes.
      - [Apparel]

Do not be too moral. You may cheat yourself out of much life so. Aim above morality. Be not simply good; be good for something.
      - [Morality]

Dreams are the touchstones of our character.
      - [Dreams]

Duty is one and invariable; it requires no impossibilities, nor can it ever be disregarded with impunity.
      - [Duty]

Each thought that is welcomed and recorded is a nest egg, by the side of which more will be laid.
      - [Thought]

Even the best things are not equal to their fame.
      - [Fame]

Even trees do not die without a groan.
      - [Death : Trees]

Every generation laughs at the old fashions, but follows religiously the new.
      - [Fashion]

Every leaf and twig was * * * covered with a sparkling ice armor. Even the grasses in exposed fields were hung with innumerable diamond pendants, which jingled merrily when brushed by the foot of the traveler. * * * It was as if some super-incumbent stratum of the earth had been removed in the night, exposing to light a bed of untarnished crystals.
      - [Winter]

Every man is tasked to make his life, even in its details, worthy of the contemplation of his most elevated and critical hour.
      - [Life]

Explore thyself. Herein are demanded the eye and the nerve.
      - [Self-examination]

Faith keeps many doubts in her pay. If I could not doubt, I should not believe.
      - [Doubt]

Fire is the most tolerable third party.
      - [Fire]

For an impenetrable shield, stand inside yourself.
      - [Self]

For every ten people who are clipping at the branches of evil, you're lucky to find one who's hacking at the roots.
      - [Evil]

Friendship is the unspeakable joy and blessing that result to two or more individuals who from constitution sympathize. Such natures are liable to no mistakes, but will know each other through thick and thin. Between two by nature alike and fitted to sympathize, there is no veil, and there can be no obstacle. Who are the estranged? Two friends explaining.
      - [Friendship]

Genius is only as rich as it is generous. If it hoards, it impoverishes itself. What the banker sighs for, the meanest clown may have--leisure and a quiet mind.
      - [Genius]

Good for the body is the work of the body, good for the soul the work of the soul, and good for either the work of the other.
      - [Work]

Goodness is the only investment that never fails.
      - [Goodness]

Government never furthered any enterprise but by the alacrity with which it got out of its way.
      - [Government]

He is blessed over all mortals who loses no moment of the passing life in remembering the past.
      - [Memory]

Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.
      - [Heaven]

Homeliness is almost as great a merit in a book as in a house, if the reader would abide there. It is next to beauty, and a very high art.
      - [Books]

Humility, like darkness, reveals the heavenly lights.
      - [Humility]

I am convinced, both by faith and experience, that to maintain one's self on this earth is not a hardship but a pastime, if we will live simply and wisely; as the pursuits of the simpler nations are still the sports of the more artificial.
      - [Simplicity]
