JOHN PIERPONT
American poet and divine
(1785 - 1866)

Is beauty vain because it will fade? Then are earth's green robe and heaven's light vain.
      - [Beauty]

She led me first to God;
  Her words and prayers were my young spirit's dew--
    For when she us'd to leave
      The fireside every eve,
        I knew it was for prayer that she withdrew.
          How often has the thought
            Of my mourn'd mother brought
              Peace to my troubled spirit, and new power
                The tempter to repel!
                  Mother, thou knowest well
                    That thou hast bless'd me since my natal hour.
      - [Mothers]

Thou sparkling bowl! thou sparkling bowl!
  Through lips of bards thy brim may press,
    And eyes of beauty o'er thee roll;
      And song and dance they power confess--
        I will not touch thee; for there clings
          A scorpion to thy side that stings.
      - [Drunkenness]

A weapon that comes down as still
  As snowflakes fall upon the sod;
    But executes a freeman's will,
      As lightning does the will of God;
        And from its force, nor doors not locks
          Can shield you; 'tis the ballot-box.
      - A Word from a Petitioner [Politics]

The incense of the heart may rise.
      - Every Place a Temple [Heart]
