carved armchair, placed his damask napkin on the row of forks
beside his Royal Crown Derby plate, picked up his champagne glass
and rose to his feet, the eyes of Sally, his sixteen-year-old
daughter, met those of her grandmother across the candlelit table
with a little gleam of half-humorous, half-deprecatory sympathy.
