REGINALD HEBER
English poet and bishop of Calcutta
(1783 - 1826)

Bread of the world, in mercy broken,
  Wine of the soul, in mercy shed,
    By whom the words of life were spoken,
      And in whose death our sins are dead:
        Look on the heart by sorrow broken,
          Look on the tears by sinners shed;
            And be Thy feast to us the token
              That by Thy grace our souls are fed.
      - [Communion]

Eternity has no gray hairs! The flowers fade, the heart withers, man grows old and dies, the world lies down in the sepulchre of ages, but time writes no wrinkles on the brow of eternity.
      - [Eternity]

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty;
  Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee,
    Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty;
      God in three persons, blessed Trinity.
        Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore Thee.
          Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea,
            Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
              Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.
                Holy, holy, holy! tho the darkness hide Thee,
                  Tho the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see,
                    Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee
                      Perfect in power, in love, and purity.
                        Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty;
                          All Thy works shall praise Thy name, in earth and sky and sea:
                            Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty;
                              God in three persons, blessed Trinity.
                                Amen.
      - [Trinity Sunday]

In moderating, not in satisfying desires, lies peace.
      - [Desire]

No workman steel, no pond'rous axes rung:
  Like some tall palm the noiseless fabric sprung.
      - [Architecture]

Remember that every guilty compliance with the humors of the world, every sinful indulgence of our own passions, is laying up cares and fears for the hour of darkness; and that the remembrance of ill-spent time will strew our sick-bed with thorns, and rack our sinking spirits with despair.
      - [Sin]

Then tower'd the palace, then in awful state
  The temple rear'd its everlasting gate.
    No workman steel, no ponderous axes rung,
      Like some tall palm the noiseless fabric sprung.
      - [Creation]

We have a friend and protector, from whom, if we do not ourselves depart from Him, nor power nor spirit can separate us. In His strength let us proceed on our journey, through the storms, and troubles, and dangers of the world. However they may rage and swell, though the mountains shake at the tempests, our rock will not be moved: we have one friend who will never forsake us; one refuge, where we may rest in peace and stand in our lot at the end of the days. That same is He who liveth, and was dead; who is alive forevermore; and hath the keys of hell and of death.
      - [God]

When the veil of death has been drawn between us and the objects of our regard, how quick-sighted do we become to their merits, and how bitterly do we remember words, or even looks, of unkindness which may have escaped in our intercourse with them.
      - [Death]

Death rides on every passing breeze,
  He lurks in every flower.
      - At a Funeral (st. 3) [Death : Proverbs]

What though the spicy breezes
  Blow soft o'er Ceylon's isle;
    Though every prospect pleases,
      And only man is vile;
        In vain with lavish kindness
          The gifts of God are strown;
            The heathen in his blindness
              Bows down to wood and stone.
      - From Greenland's Icy Mountains--Missionary Hymn
        [Man : Worship]

When Spring unlocks the flowers to paint the laughing soil.
      - Hymn for Seventh Sunday after Trinity
        [Spring]

Then on! then on! where duty leads,
  My course be onward still.
      - Journal [Duty]

From Greenland's icy mountains,
  From India's coral strand,
    Where Afric's sunny fountains
      Roll down their golden sand;
        From many an ancient river,
          From many a palmy plain,
            They call us to deliver
              Their land from error's chain.
      - Missionary Hymn [Religion]

The heathen in his blindness
  Bows down to wood and stone.
      - Missionary Hymn [Gods]

Failed the bright promise of your early day?
      - Palestine (l. 113) [Failure]

No hammers fell, no ponderous axes rung,
  Like some tall palm the mystic fabric sprung.
    Majestic silence.
      - Palestine (l. 163) [Architecture]

With drooping bells of clearest blue
  Thou didst attract my childish view,
    Almost resembling
      The azure butterflies that flew
        Where on the heath thy blossoms grew
          So lightly trembling.
      - The Harebell [Harebells]

Before, beside us, and above
  The firefly lights his lamp of love.
      - Tour Through Ceylon [Fireflies]
