TERRORISM
[ Also see Extremism Fanaticism ]

When they try to intimidate us, we will not be intimidated, when they seek to change our country, our way of life by these methods, we will not be changed. When they try to divide our people or weaken our resolve, we will not be divided and our resolve will hold firm. We will show by our spirit and dignity and by a quiet and true strength that there is in the British people that our values will long outlast theirs. The purpose of terrorism is just that. It is to terrorize people, and we will not be terrorized. This is a very sad day for the British people but we will hold true to the British way of life.
  . . .
It's important, however, that those engaged in terrorism realize that our determination to defend our values and our way of life is greater than their determination to cause death and destruction to innocent people in a desire to impose extremism on the world.
Whatever they do, it is our determination that they will never succeed in destroying what we hold dear in this country and in other civilized nations throughout the world.
      - Tony Blair

America has entered a great struggle that tests our strength, and even more our resolve. Our nation is patient and steadfast. We continue to pursue the terrorists in cities and camps and caves across the earth. We are joined by a great coalition of nations to rid the world of terror. And we will not allow any terrorist or tyrant to threaten civilization with weapons of mass murder. Now and in the future, Americans will live as free people, not in fear, and never at the mercy of any foreign plot or power.
      - George Walker Bush,
in a speech at Ellis Island, New York, New York, on Sep. 11, 2002

Our nation was horrified, but it's not going to be terrorized.
      - George Walker Bush,
on the destruction of New York's World Trade Center

Our response involves far more than instant retaliation and isolated strikes. Americans should not expect one battle, but a lengthy campaign, unlike any other we have ever seen. It may include dramatic strikes, visible on TV, and covert operations, secret even in success. We will starve terrorists of funding, turn them one against another, drive them from place to place, until there is no refuge or no rest. And we will pursue nations that provide aid or safe haven to terrorism. Every nation, in every region, now has a decision to make. Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists. From this day forward, any nation that continues to harbor or support terrorism will be regarded by the United States as a hostile regime.
      - George Walker Bush,
in a speech before the U.S. Congress on Sep. 20, 2001, on the destruction of New York's World Trade Center

States like these, and their terrorist allies, constitute an axis of evil, arming to threaten the peace of the world. By seeking weapons of mass destruction, these regimes pose a grave and growing danger. They could provide these arms to terrorists, giving them the means to match their hatred. They could attack our allies or attempt to blackmail the United States. In any of these cases, the price of indifference would be catastrophic.
      - George Walker Bush,
in his State of the Union address

This act will not stand. We will find those who did it. We will smoke them out of their holes. We'll get them running and bring them to justice.
      - George Walker Bush,
on the destruction of New York's World Trade Center

We are not deceived by their pretenses to piety. We have seen their kind before. They are the heirs of all the murderous ideologies of the 20th century. By sacrificing human life to serve their radical visions--by abandoning every value except the will to power--they follow in the path of fascism, and Nazism, and totalitarianism. And they will follow that path all the way, to where it ends: in history's unmarked grave of discarded lies.
      - George Walker Bush,
in a speech before the U.S. Congress on Sep. 20, 2001, on the destruction of New York's World Trade Center

Finally, I want to speak through you, directly, to those who came to London today to take lives. I do know that you do not fear to give your own lives. That is why you are so dangerous. But I do know that you fear you may fail in your long-term objective to destroy our free society.
I can show you why you'll fail. In the days that follow, look at our airports, look at our seaports, and look at our railway stations. And even after your cowardly attacks, people from the rest of Britain, people from around the world will arrive in London to become Londoners and to fulfil their dreams and achieve their potential.
They choose to come to London, as so many have come before, because they come to be free, they come to live the life they choose, they come to be able to be themselves.
They flee you, because you tell them how they should live. They don't want that. And however many of us you kill, they will not stop their flight to our cities where freedom is strong and where people can live in harmony with one another.
Whatever you do, however many you kill, you will fail.
      - Ken Livingstone

No one can terrorize a whole nation, unless we are all his accomplices.
      - Edward R. Murrow,
of Joseph McCarthy on a television broadcast

This is not jihad. This is strictly business.
      - Essam al Ridi,
quoting ex-boss Osama bin Laben at the trial of terrorists

The forces we face represent very hardened elements of Al Qaeda and Taliban, true deadenders.
      - Donald Rumsfeld

They will do more whether we do what we're doing or whether we don't do what we're doing. And the idea that you could appease them [terrorists] by stopping doing what we're doing or some implication that by doing what we're doing we're inciting them to attack us is just utter nonsense. It's just--it's kind of like feeding an alligator, hoping it eats you last.
      - Donald Rumsfeld

We do know of certain knowledge that he [Osama bin Laden] is either in Afghanistan, or in some other country, or dead.
      - Donald Rumsfeld
