(1631 - 1700)

May widows wed as often as they can,
  And ever for the better change their man;
And some devouring plague pursue their lives,
Who will not well be govern'd by their wives.
      - [Widows]

Men's virtues I have commended as freely as I have taxed their crimes.
      - [Taxes]

Merit challenges envy.
      - [Merit]

My hands are guilty, but my heart is free.
      - [Guilt]

My loss is such as cannot be repair'd,
And to the wretched, life can be no mercy.
      - [Despair]

Near the Cimmerians, in his dark abode, deep in a cavern dwells the drowsy god.
      - [Sleep]

Never was patriot yet, but was a fool.
      - [Patriotism]

New vows to plight, and plighted vows to break.
      - [Coquette]

No king nor nation one moment can retard the appointed hour.
      - [Death]

No more delay, vain boaster, but begin.
      - [Boasting]

None but the brave deserve the fair.
      - [Proverbs]

None, none descends into himself, to find
The secret imperfections of his mind:
But every one is eagle-ey'd to see
      Another's faults, and his deformity.
      - [Faults]

Nor to rebuke the rich offender fear'd;
His preaching much, but more his practice wrought,
(A living sermon of the truths he taught,)
For this by rules severe his life he squar'd,
That all might see the doctrine which they heard.
      - [Ministers]

Not sharp revenge, nor hell itself can find,
A fiercer torment than a guilty mind,
Which day and night doth dreadfully accuse,
Condemns the wretch, and still the charge renews.
      - [Remorse]

Not the mountain ice, congealed to crystals, is so frosty chaste as thy victorious soul, which conquers man, and man's proud tyrant, passion.
      - [Chastity]

Nothing to build, and all things to destroy.
      - [Zeal]

Now cold despair
  To livid paleness turns the glowing red;
His blood, scarce liquid, creeps within his veins,
Like water which the freezing wind constrains.
      - [Despair]

O cursed hunger of pernicious gold?
      - [Misers]

O freedom, first delight of human kind!
      - [Freedom]

O impudent! regardful of thy own, whose thoughts are centred on thyself alone!
      - [Self-love]

O, happy youth! for whom thy fate reserved so fair a bride.
      - [Bride]

Oh! let me live forever on those lips!
The nectar of the gods to these is tasteless.
      - [Kisses]

Oh, frail estate of human things!
      - [Vanity]

Old age creeps on us ere we think it nigh.
      - [Proverbs]

Once more for pity, that I may keep the flavor upon my lips till we meet again.
      - [Kisses]
