Thoughts shut up want air,
  And spoil like bales unopen'd to the sun.
      - [Proverbs]

Thy pleasure points the shaft, and bends the bow;
  The cluster lasts, or bids it brightly glow.
      - [Affliction]

Time elaborately thrown away.
      - [Waste]

Time on his head has snowed, yet still 'tis borne aloft.
      - [Time]

'Tis great, 'tis manly, to disdain disguise;
  It shows our spirit, or it proves our strength.
      - [Disguise]

'Tis great--'tis manly to disdain disguise,
  It shows our spirit, or it proves our strength.
      - [Candor]

To know the world, not love her, is thy point;
  She gives but little, nor that little long.
      - [World]

To murder thousands takes a specious name.
      - [War]

To-day is yesterday returned; returned
  Full-powered to cancel, expiate, raise, adorn,
    And reinstate us on the rock of peace:
      Let it not share its predecessor's fate,
        Nor like its elder sisters die a fool.
      - [Today]

Triflers not even in trifles can excel.
      - [Trifles]

True happiness resides in things not seen.
      - [Felicity]

True wisdom is the price of happiness.
      - [Happiness]

Vain is the world, but only to the vain.
      - [Vanity]

Virtue, our present peace, our future prize,
  Man's unprecarious, natural estate,
    Improvable at will, in virtue lies;
      Its tenure sure; its income is divine.
      - [Virtue]

We take no note of time
  But from its loss.
      - [Proverbs]

What day, what hour, but knocks at human hearts,
  To wake the soul to sense of future scenes?
    Deaths stand like Mercurys, in every way,
      And kindly point us to our journey's end.
      - [Death]

What is revenge but courage to call in our honor's debts, and wisdom to convert others' self-love into our own protection?
      - [Revenge]

What is station high?
  'Tis a proud mendicant; it boasts, and begs;
    It begs an alms of homage from the throng,
      And oft the throng denies its charity.
      - [Station]

What is this world? thy school, O Misery!
      - [Work]

What so foolish as the chase of fame?
  How vain the prize! how impotent our aim!
    For what are men who grasp at praise sublime,
      But bubbles on the rapid stream of time,
        That rise and fall, that swell, and are no more,
          Born and forgot, ten thousand in an hour.
      - [Fame]

What's true beauty but fair virtue's face,--virtue made visible in outward grace.
      - [Beauty]

Whatever farce the boastful hero plays,
  Virtue alone has majesty in death.
      - [Virtue]

Whatever other learning he wanted, he was master of two books unknown to many profound readers, though books which the last conflagration can alone destroy,--I mean the book of nature and that of man.
      - [Shakespeare]

When men of infamy to grandeur soar,
  They light a torch to show their shame the more,
    Those governments which curb not evils, cause!
      And a rich knave's a libel on our laws.
      - [Vice]

When men once reach their autumn, sickly joys fall off apace, as yellow leaves from trees.
      - [Age]
