It is wonderful how soon a piano gets into a log-hut on the frontier. You would think they found it under a pine-stump. With it comes a Latin grammar, and one of those tow-head boys has written a hymn on Sunday. Now let colleges, now let senates take heed! for here is one who, opening these fine tastes on the basis of the pioneer's iron constitution, will gather all their laurels in his strong hands.
      - [Progress]

It seems as if the day was not wholly profane in which we have given heed to some natural object.
      - [Improvement]

Justice satisfies everybody, and justice alone.
      - [Justice]

Knowledge exists to be imparted.
      - [Knowledge]

Knowledge is knowing that we cannot know.
      - [Knowledge]

Lawyers are a prudent race though not very fond of liberty.
      - [Lawyers]

Let not the emphasis of hospitality lie in bed and board; but let truth and love and honor and courtesy flow in all thy deeds.
      - [Hospitality]

Let the stoics say what they please, we do not eat for the good of living, but because the meat is savory and the appetite is keen.
      - [Eating]

Let us be silent, so we may hear the whisper of the gods.
      - [Silence]

Let us interrogate the great apparition, that shines so peacefully around us.
      - [Questions]

Let us learn the meaning of economy. Economy is a high human office,--a sacrament when its aim is grand, when it is the prudence of simple tastes, when it is practised for freedom or for love or devotion.
      - [Economy]

Let us, if we must have great actions, make our own so. All action is of infinite elasticity, and the least admits of being inflated with celestial air, until it eclipses the sun and moon.
      - [Action]

Liberty is a slow fruit.
      - [Liberty]

Life consists in what a man is thinking of all day.
      - [Thinking]

Life is a festival only to the wise.
      - [Life]

Life is a perpetual instruction in cause and effect.
      - [Life]

Life is a search after power; and this is an element with which the world is so saturated--there is no chink or crevice in which it is not lodged--that no honest seeker goes unrewarded.
      - [Power]

Life itself is a bubble and a scepticism, and a sleep within a sleep.
      - [Life]

Life wastes itself while we are preparing to live.
      - [Life]

Like Shakespeare, for all time.
      - [Homer]

Look sharply after your thoughts. They come unlooked for, like a new bird seen on your trees, and, if you turn to you usual task, disappear; and you shall never find that perception again; never, I say--but perhaps years, ages, and I know not what events and worlds may lie between you and its return!
      - [Thought]

Love, and you shall be loved.
      - [Love]

Make yourself necessary to somebody.
      - [Necessity]

Man begins life helpless. The babe is in paroxysms of fear the moment its nurse leaves it alone, and it comes so slowly to any power of self-protection that mothers say the salvation of the life and health of a young child is a perpetual miracle.
      - [Fear]

Man is a god in ruins.
      - [God]
